16 year old girl in Saudi Arabia drinks bleach to avoid arranged marriage
A girl known only as Shaikha drank a bottle of bleach in an attempted suicide to avoid an arranged marriage with a 75-year-old man. Sheikh Abdul Mohsin Al Obeikan, Shura Council member had denounced the marriage, but not on the basis that it was a 13-year-old girl and a 75-year-old man. Instead, he noted that Sharia law requires the consent of the girl. But if the girl consented, it wouldn't be a forced arranged marriage.
Shaikha told the paper how she begged and pleaded not to be forced into marriage but both her father and her arranged husband ignored her.
Islamic law states that for a marriage to be legal both parties must consent. If a marriage is performed without consent or under coercion the union is considered void and must be annulled.
