A 63 Texas man is acquitted after killing a 13 year old boy over candy
Here's the back story. Four boys were looking for some snacks late one night, so they broke into the house of Jose Luis Gonzalez, a 63 year old homeowner living in Texas. Jose saw the kids break in, grabbed his shotgun and confronted the kids.
Luis then ordered all four boys to get on their knees and beg him for forgiveness for breaking into his house. He then claims the 13 year old boy 'lunged at him', so he fired his shotgun at close range into the boy's back. If you just had a 'WTF moment', you're not alone. How can you mistake a child lunging at you, yet you shoot him in his back while he's on his knees.
Luis then ordered the 3 other kids (at gunpoint) to carry the body of their friend outside. Thankfully he let the other kids go, but he was arrested and charged with murder shortly after the incident. When he was arrested, his neighbors were outraged, insisting he had the right to kill all four of the kids in his own home.
Luis said 'I thank God and my attorney, the jury and the judge, It was a case where it was my life or theirs, and it's a very good thing that they (the jurors) decided in my favor'. Luis'lawyer said 'I feel vindicated for Mr. Gonzalez and his family and for all of the homeowners and all of the seniors in Laredo. This case has huge implications across the board. We always, always believed in Mr. Gonzalez's right to defend his life and his property.'
